吳冠中 1919年出生于江蘇宜興。1942年畢業(yè)于杭州國立藝術(shù)專科學(xué)校，1946年考取教育部公費(fèi)留學(xué)，1947年到巴黎國立高級美術(shù)學(xué)校，隨蘇弗爾學(xué)習(xí)西洋美術(shù)史。1950年秋返國，先后任教于中央美術(shù)學(xué)院、清華大學(xué)建筑系、北京藝術(shù)學(xué)院、中央工藝美術(shù)學(xué)院。1991年，法國文化部授予其“法國文藝最高勛位”。 1994年，當(dāng)選為全國政協(xié)常委。1999年，國家文化部主辦“吳冠中畫展”。2000年，入選法蘭西學(xué)院學(xué)術(shù)院院通訊院士，是首位獲此殊榮的中國籍藝術(shù)家，也是法蘭西學(xué)院成立近二百年來第一位獲此職位的亞洲人。
Born in 1919 in Jiangsu Province, Wu Guanzhong graduated from Hangzhou National Art College in 1942 and was selected to study abroad with government fund in 1946. In 1947, he arrived at école Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris where he studied Western history of art under the instruction of Jean Souverbie. After return of China in 1950, he taught in The China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Architecture Department of Tsinghua University, Beijing College of Art and The Central Academy of Craft and Fine Arts. In 1991, the artist was awarded with the Highest Order of Honor by Cultural Department of France. In 1994, Wu became the member of National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In 1999, the National Cultural Department held exhibition for the artist. In 2000, Wu became the correspondent member of the French Academy.
